Program Mission

The Pen Pal Program provides an opportunity for K-12 students to improve communication skills while also learning about the college experience. The Pen Pal Program began in 2020, as a way to connect with and enrich local students safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pen Pal Program currently provides a virtual low commitment opportunity for YES volunteers.

Pen Pal Program Goals

  • To continue a fun, dynamic program that is beneficial for both Cal Poly Humboldt and K-5 students and teachers

  • To enrich and extend classroom curriculum for both Cal Poly Humboldt and K-5 students and teachers

  • To create an opportunity for HSU and K-5 students to learn new skills and advance communication, interpersonal skills and creative thinking

  • To create communication pathways and “next step” experiences for K-5 students

  • To provide opportunities for Cal Poly Humboldt students to serve as positive role models and explore their passions and potential career paths
